Decisive weeks lying ahead

Our aim is to have the alliance built by the end of April so that we could launch the campaign in May.

The European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) would be the first instrument of direct democracy at European level. It would undoubtedly increase citizens direct influence on the agenda-setting of the EU. But due to the current crises of the EU, the European institutions themselves will not introduce it. Thus it is now time for a real bottom-up initiative to finally get this right applied.
Democracy International, together with the European students forum AEGEE, and supported by Café Babel-Brussels, Agora Europe Foundation, Forum for Democratic Development, are promoting the rapid introduction of the European Citizens’ Initiative by the EU-institutions. Currently we are building up a broad alliance of civil society organisations. We are involving as many NGOs as possible, representing various sectors (e.g. churches, youth organisations, environmental NGOs). Many NGOs and individuals are showing interest in organising a common campaign. Some networks (e.g. the civil society contact group, the European Civic Forum, the Permanent Forum of Civil Society and the European Movement) will decide very soon whether they will join the “Initiative for the Initiative”
